It&#8217;s been a year since we first covered <a href="https://bitcoinist.com/nft-tracks-down-nft-rug-squiggles/">the story surrounding Squiggles</a>, an NFT rugpull that was traced down with a full-fledged manifesto. The NFT market has seen so much come and go since this time, but the story of Squiggles has at least one more chapter left in it.
Reports have emerged on Thursday that a U.S. Federal Grand Jury is investigating the founders of the project, including reviewing the aforementioned manifesto document and social media posts.
Let&#8217;s dive into the latest in the &#8216;Squiggles saga.&#8217;
Squandering The Squiggles
Not to be confused with the more popular (and of course, much more established and legitimate NFT project) Chromie Squiggles, which fall under the Art Blocks umbrella, this Squiggles NFT project sought the aesthetic seen in projects like Doodles &#8211; leaning heavy into cartoonish, wavy visuals.
The manifesto, titled &#8216;Squiggles Rug Alert,&#8217; caught arguably more attention than the project itself last year, and spanned nearly 60 pages in total. It was released in the hours leading up to mint, and caused quite the uproar in the NFT community; at the time, many of the biggest crypto sleuths and critics, including the likes of Coffeezilla, ZachXBT, NFTEthics, and more released threads and details around the rug. OpenSea swiftly pulled the project from their platform as the commotion grew.
A year later, it was largely believed that the organizers of this rugpull had finally settled with their bag and moved on from the NFT space. While the Squiggles project has continued to be active on Twitter, commentary and dialogue with the account largely reinforces the widespread belief that this project was a full-fledged rug. However, the story might not be quite over yet.

Federal Investigation: What We Know
The project&#8217;s three founders, Gavin Mayo, Gabriel Hay, and Ali Saghi are cited in the Grand Jury paperwork that has been circulating online Thursday. Federal investigators are specifically looking into violations of Sections 1343 and 1957 in Title 18 of U.S. code, which are related to wire fraud and money laundering.
Interestingly, the news was seemingly first broken by popular independent crypto platform DB News in a tweet that has since been deleted. Bitcoinist was not able to locate the origin of the Grand Jury paperwork that has circulated online.
While the full veracity of the reports cannot be verified in their entirety, these reports should not surprise anyone; U.S. investigators have cracked down in recent months over a number of high-profile NFT and DeFi rugs.

Ralio Dalio Praises Bitcoin For 12 Years Of History, But Issues Warning

In a recent <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/02/02/cnbc-exclusive-cnbc-transcript-bridgewater-associates-founder-ray-dalio-speaks-with-cnbcs-squawk-box-today.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">interview</a>, Bridgewater founder Ray Dalio shared his views on the current Federal Reserve (FED) decision to raise interest rates by 25 basis points (bps) and the performance of Bitcoin (BTC) over the past few years. 
Speaking to CNBC, Dalio stated that what the crypto industry and Bitcoin have done over the past 12 years has been &#8220;amazing.&#8221; However, the hedge fund manager believes Bitcoin has &#8220;no relationship to anything.&#8221; For Dalio, Bitcoin is a &#8220;tiny&#8221; thing that gets &#8220;disproportionate attention.&#8221;

The price of Bitcoin moves on its own, while the value of Bitcoin is less than a third of the importance of Microsoft stock, Dalio said. For the Bridgewater hedge fund founder, there are more exciting assets in terms of value and storage of wealth.
There are a lot of other industries that are more interesting to Dalio than Bitcoin and the cryptocurrency market, like biotech and the stock market. Cryptocurrency&#8217;s not an effective medium of exchange for him, and he speculates that it won&#8217;t be sufficient money in the future.
Commenting on the recent decisions by the FED and the tightening of monetary policy that it is implementing to control inflation, Dalio says that in &#8220;the world we live in, money, as we know, is in jeopardy.&#8221;
<h2>Dalio&#8217;s View On The Future Store Of Wealth</h2>
For Dalio, the importance of a store of wealth is the key to future macroeconomic recessions. He suggests that every economic crisis is a cycle, but &#8220;Bitcoin is not the solution.&#8221; In addition, Dalio claims that stablecoins are not the solution to future problems, as he suggests that they will turn back into fiat currency. He warns:
<blockquote>(&#8230;) I think that what you really would, what would be best is an inflation linked coin. In other words, something where basically you would say okay, this is going to give me buying power because every individual wants, what do they want? They want to secure their buying power, if you want to save. </blockquote>
In that sense, Dalio assures that industries will see the development of new currencies never seen before, which will be attractive for investment and storing wealth. He emphasized that Bitcoin will remain &#8220;unfit&#8221; for this task in the future.

If the cryptocurrency market were to experience another six months of crypto winter, it might not mean new lows. In 2015, Bitcoin attempted to breakout form its bear market bottom, only to be rejected down for precisely six more weeks of crypto winter.

Indonesia to unveil national crypto exchange by June

Indonesia is set to roll out its national <a href="https://coinjournal.net/exchanges/">crypto exchange</a> in the next few months, the country&rsquo;s Trade Ministry has said.&nbsp;
As previously <a href="https://coinjournal.net/news/indonesia-intends-to-launch-its-own-cryptocurrency-exchange/">reported</a> by CoinJournal, the country indicated it would be launching the exchange this year. The latest crypto news on the subject as highlited by a local <a href="https://jakartaglobe.id/business/trade-ministry-to-roll-out-crypto-bourse-before-june-2023" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"></a>news outlet, is that the Indonesian government is looking to have the crypto bourse ready by June 2023.&nbsp;
Currently, crypto assets trading in Indonesia falls under the purview of the Commodity Futures Trading Regulatory Agency.
<h2 dir="ltr">Indonesia&rsquo;s growing crypto landscape</h2>
The new timeline comes after new developments (authorities suspended the licensing of new exchanges) and other official delays forced the relevant government bodies working on the project to push the launch from the originally envisaged rollout of December 2022.&nbsp;
But December also saw lawmakers in the House of Representatives <a href="https://www.idnfinancials.com/news/45430/dpr-ratifies-psk-bill-omnibus-law-financial-sector" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">pass</a> the Financial Sector Development and Reinforcement Bill.
The bill, referred to as the omnibus law, is now Indonesia&rsquo;s primary legal reference for the broader financial services industry. Among the areas covered in the new law is the regulatory oversight of crypto exchanges.&nbsp;
At the moment, a review of digital asset exchanges earmarked to join the national crypto exchange is ongoing. Per the latest report on the matter, the government has identified five active, registered exchanges from a list of 25 for the role.
Commenting on the upcoming bourse, Indonesia&rsquo;s Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan said there&rsquo;s need for everything to be done to ensure all is set before launch. According to him, rushing the project could end up with a scenario where the public who are still learning about crypto trading get harmed by the very project designed to protect them.

<a href="https://coinjournal.net/news/tag/ethereum/">Ethereum</a> has a big event looming on the horizon.&nbsp;
The much-awaited Shanghai upgrade is slated for March. This is a pivotal date because, after a long wait for investors, the ETH locked up in the ETH 2.0 staking contract will finally be released.&nbsp;
And, there&rsquo;s a lot of it. 16.4 million ETH, to be precise, which is equivalent to 15% of the entire supply. This locked ETH is worth close to $26 billion at time of writing.&nbsp;

<h2 dir="ltr">Ethereum volume and TVL is down</h2>
Unless you&rsquo;ve been living under a rock, you will know that the last year in crypto has been, well, decidedly unfun.&nbsp;Volumes, interest and prices have cratered in the space, as a dire macro environment coupled with several crypto scandals have torpedoed the market.&nbsp;
For Ethereum, when looking at transaction volume, the numbers have actually held up a little better than perhaps one could have expected, however still don&rsquo;t make overly pretty reading.&nbsp;
From a peak of 1.5 million transactions per day, the number has certainly come down, but is still lingering around the million mark, and up substantially from pre-COVID. Notably, several of Ethereum&rsquo;s rivals have fallen significantly more, with its market share consequently growing; it may be a bigger piece of the pie, but the pie is significantly smaller.&nbsp;

<h2 dir="ltr">Capital has fled the Ethereum ecosystem</h2>
TVL is perhaps a better indicator. The metric sums up the capital flight from the space well, with Ethereum down to $28 billion, a 74% fall from its peak of $109 billion in November 2021.&nbsp;

I included the ETH price on the above chart to demonstrate how correlated with the price this is. That makes intuitive sense, obviously, and ETH&rsquo;s price has collapsed in live with the TVL.&nbsp;
But when denominating the above chart in ETH rather than USD, it still shows a fall-off.&nbsp;
This is indicative of a decline in the crypto space in general, but also the very real threat to DeFi that is rising interest rates in the economy.&nbsp;
The Federal Reserve has engaged in an extremely aggressive hiking cycle, as it moves to aggressively rein in inflation. Not only has this nuked the price of risk assets, but it has offered a competitive source of yield for investors, who previously were forced to move out on the risk curve, many of whom looked towards sky-high DeFi rates.&nbsp;
Not only has the Fed rate jumped from near zero up towards 4.5%, but DeFi yields have collapsed in the opposite direction, driven down towards 1%/2% from the dizzying levels seen during the pandemic, many of which were in the teens. This has caused extra capital to flee Ethereum. &nbsp;

<h2 dir="ltr">Eyes now turn to Shanghai upgrade</h2>
All eyes now will turn to the Shanghai upgrade, the next major date for Etheruem, following the Merge event which went live in September and converted the network to Proof-of-Stake, from its prior Proof-of-Work consensus.&nbsp;
While liquid staking options have allowed many investors to trade ETH regardless, the release of so much ETH is nonetheless a big deal. I&rsquo;ll follow up with another piece on what this could mean for the price of ETH, but regarding the fundamentals and continued development of the network, it is certainly a step in the right direction.&nbsp;
The Merge dragged on but came and went smoothly in September. The Shanghai upgrade is the next stage of that.&nbsp;
Crypto has been hurt immensely in the last year, and Ethereum has felt the brunt of that. Freefalling volumes, capital and prices are indicative of that. And while macro continues to <a href="https://coinjournal.net/news/bitcoins-hedge-narrative-is-dead-as-speculative-price-action-continues/">drive the bus</a> for crypto, that will (hopefully) turn around eventually. Then &ndash; and only then &ndash; &nbsp;these things will help set Ethereum up to resume its growth. But it&rsquo;s a long road back.&nbsp;

Optimism is rallying again as excitement around the <a href="https://coinjournal.net/ethereum/">Ethereum</a> layer 2 scaling solution increased following a major news announcement.
As shown on the 4-hour chart below, OP reached a new all-time high of $2.97 on <a href="https://coinjournal.net/exchanges/coinbase/">Coinbase</a>. As of 11:20 am ET on 2 February, the platform&rsquo;s native token OP was trading at $2.91, still up by more than 32% in the past 24 hours.

Optimism&rsquo;s gains in the past few hours have come as buying pressure ramped up ahead of what promises to be groundbreaking network upgrade.
On Wednesday, the Optimism Foundation <a href="https://gov.optimism.io/t/draft-upgrade-proposal-bedrock/5014" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">released</a> a proposal seeking to deploy an upgrade to the protocol&rsquo;s mainnet. It is the first major upgrade to the Optimism protocol and brings a rollups architecture to the protocol, with &nbsp;transaction batching one of the main features highlighting the huge impact the upgrade could have for the blockchain&rsquo;s performance.
&ldquo;This upgrade offers a new level of modularity, simplicity, and Ethereum equivalence for Layer 2 solutions, providing unprecedented performance and functionality,&rdquo; the Optimism Foundation wrote.
Improvements set to be added via the Bedrock release include reduced transaction fees, high throughput and improved sync speeds.
According to the team, the upgrade will not impact most users as the Optimism mainnet is &ldquo;already EVM-equivalent.&rdquo; However, some users including those running full and archive nodes have to take action in preparation for the upgrade.
The Bedrock proposal is expected to go through a two-week voting period, with deployment to the mainnet scheduled for 15 March if it passes.

Shares of DMG Blockchain Solutions Inc (CVE: DMGI) have already more than doubled this year but an H.C. Wainwright analyst is convinced the stock still has massive room to the upside.
<h2>DMG stock has upside to C$1.0 a share</h2>
On Thursday, Kevin Dede reiterated his &ldquo;buy&rdquo; rating on the blockchain firm. His C$1.0 price objective suggests another 200% upside from here.
The bullish call arrives only days after DMG Blockchain Solutions said a sharp increase in bitcoin mining saw its revenue more than quadruple in <a href="https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2023/01/31/2598037/0/en/DMG-Blockchain-Solutions-Reports-Fourth-Quarter-and-Year-End-Results-Ending-September-30-2022.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fiscal 2022</a> to C$43.2 million.

Dede likes DMG also for its healthy profit margins. The cryptocurrency company mined 200 bitcoins in its fourth financial quarter at an average cost of about $10,000. The <a href="https://hcwco.bluematrix.com/sellside/EmailDocViewer?encrypt=aa678830-55bd-41a3-aa52-de771d640d62&amp;mime=pdf&amp;co=Hcwco&amp;id=jayson.derrick@investoogroup.com&amp;source=mail" target="_blank" rel="noopener">research note</a> reads:

Indian Retail Chain Enables CBDC Payments In Stores

Digital currency is becoming popular as several countries have begun launching their own central bank digital currency (CBDC) while promoting its adoption. In today’s news, <a href="https://bitcoinist.com/indias-draconian-crypto-aiming-for-blanket-ban/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">India&#8217;s</a> largest retail chain, Reliance Retail, announced that it had added support for the CBDC digital rupee payments in its stores&#8217; lines. 
According to the retail chain, it plans to further expand the support to its other businesses in the future. Reliance Retail is one of the first firms in India to accept the country’s CBDC as a payment method. Currently, the digital rupee is accepted in Reliance Retail gourmet store line, Freshpik.
<h2>Reliance Retail To Expand The Support Of Indian CBDC</h2>
To foster the adoption of the digital rupee in India, Reliance Retails said it would expand the enablement of the <a href="https://bitcoinist.com/indias-central-bank-rbi-to-soon-launch-cbdc-pilot/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CBDC</a> as a payment method to its other properties. According to an executive at Reliance Retail, V, Subramaniam, the firm’s acceptance of the CBDC is in line with the company&#8217;s goal to bring “the power of choice” to Indian consumers.

Subramaniam further went ahead to point out that the move enables the company to offer various payment method options for Indian customers within its stores. Customers who choose to purchase any item in the store with the digital rupee will be provided a QR code which they’d have to scan in order to complete payment.
Per a <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2023/02/02/india-retail-reliance-cbdc-digital-rupee-stores/" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">report</a> from TechCrunch, the CBDC enablement was a part of its partnership with ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and fintech company Innoviti Technologies. 
<h2>RBI Plans For The Region’s CBDC</h2>
While the main purpose for developing the digital rupee has already been implemented, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) seems to have more plans for the digital currency. In a <a href="https://rbidocs.rbi.org.in/rdocs/PublicationReport/Pdfs/CONCEPTNOTEACB531172E0B4DFC9A6E506C2C24FFB6.PDF" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">51-page note published on October 7</a>, the <a href="https://bitcoinist.com/indian-minister-central-banks-stance-on-crypto/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">country’s central bank</a> pointed out some core components behind the issuance of the Indian digital rupee. 
The components included highlighting trust, safety, liquidity, and settlement finality and integrity. According to the document, for one, the country’s main stimulator of developing the CBDC is to lessen the operational costs concerning the management of physical cash in the country.
Part of the future plans the <a href="https://bitcoinist.com/indias-central-bank-rbi-to-soon-launch-cbdc-pilot/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">RBI</a> has for the CBDC include improved cross-border payments and settlements that will be advantageous to remote locations and areas without a stable electricity supply or mobile network access. 

Though the development of CBDC is on the rise, the adoption rate is still in its infancy. Meanwhile, cryptocurrency adoption is beginning to leave that infancy stage as some companies and stores have since added support for crypto assets such as <a href="https://bitcoinist.com/bitcoin-inches-closer-to-24k/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bitcoin</a> (BTC), Shiba Inu (SHIB), and Binance Coin (BNB), among others.
The cryptocurrency market, on the other hand, is demonstrating rapid growth. After experiencing several downturns last year, the global cryptocurrency market capitalization has moved over 10% since the beginning of the year, exceeding the $1 trillion mark for the first time in months.
